A popular historical drama from Netflix was hailed as “one of the best series in history” after its epic finale – and it’s even been compared to the likes of Game of Thrones .

Season 5 of The Last Kingdom aired on Netflix last month, but the series remains a hit with viewers and remains firmly in the UK Top 10.

Based on The Saxon Stories , a set of historical fiction novels by author Bernard Cornwell, the show has garnered quite a loyal fanbase since it first aired in 2015.

Set in the second half of the ninth century, the show follows Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) as he navigates Anglo-Saxon England, which is at risk of being overrun by Viking invaders from Denmark.

A synopsis reads: “Captured as a child and raised by Danes after his uncle usurped his birthright, Uhtred comes to identify as Dane, but the misfortune and hope of recovering Bebbanburg pushes him into the service of Wessex, the last titular kingdom of the Saxons.

“From there, the story revolves around Uhtred’s conflicting loyalties between the Danes and King Alfred, the man who dares to dream of a united England capable of resisting invaders. »

Twitter users continued to applaud the show for its standout season finale, as one wrote, “The Last Kingdom is my favorite Netflix show. His series finale far exceeded the Game of Thrones finale!

“‘The Last Kingdom’ is the best show on Netflix,” tweeted another.

A third person said, “What a sight. Almost had me in tears, the last scene of the final episode. Anyone who hasn’t watched this show is truly missing out. 10/10 from me.

Someone else added: “I’m just crying over the last episode of The Last Kingdom. Feel really connected to these characters after all these years following the series.

“Dawg, The Last Kingdom on Netflix… JUST WOW. You all have to watch it. 10/10,” a fifth person wrote.

Fans of the series will now be eagerly awaiting the follow-up film Seven Kings Must Die which wrapped filming last month.

Taking to Instagram, Alexander Dreymon wrote: “It’s over [ The Last Kingdom ] at Seven Kings Must Die , and on Uhtred, son of Uhtred. As you can see, I’m a bit overwhelmed, exhausted and overwhelmed.

“I feel so lucky to have been able to live part-time as Uhtred for so many years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all. »

Netflix has yet to announce the release date for Seven Kings Must Die.
