Schumer, who co-hosted the event with Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes, made fun of Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kirsten Dunst. In an interview on Sirius XM’s, the comedienne confirms that the targets of her pranks were aware of what was to come. “I contacted people I would joke about and made sure they were okay because I’ve been burned too many times,” she says. “Besides, I didn’t want the camera to film a face that looked sad.”
Schumer made a joke about ‘King Richard’, the film about the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, for which Smith won Best Actor. “After years of Hollywood neglecting women’s stories, this year we finally have a movie about the father of the incredible Williams sisters.” She says in the interview that she informed the sisters and Will Smith and that they gave her the green light for the joke.
Who apparently didn’t let his jokes pass Smith before the ceremony was Chris Rock. The comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada’s haircut, which led to the actor walking on stage and punching him in the face. As a result, Smith resigned from the Academy and was banned from the Oscars for 10 years.
